Operating Procedures
University of Minnesota Greenhouse Facilities

1) Fill out the greenhouse space request form at least two weeks before space is needed.  In the event that space is not available, future space allocation will be determined, in part, on when space was requested.  Use of greater than one/half of a bench is considered a whole bench for billing purposes. Large benches (over 120 sq.ft.) can be divided into 1/4's if desired. Thirty square feet is the minimum area that can be requested.

2) Service charges will begin on the starting date requested if space can be assigned on that date. Otherwise, the starting date becomes the date of assignment. Service charges end once the space is completely vacated and clean of all materials.

3) Greenhouse facility users should leave the greenhouse, headhouse and/or classroom as clean or cleaner at the time of completion of an experiment, task or class as it was before using the space.

4) Maintain plants!  Inform facility supervisor/s of pest and/or disease problems so corrective measures can be taken when they occur.  All sections should be kept free of dead plant material and excess media.  Discard unwanted plant materials in the appropriate waste unit.  Every effort will be made by greenhouse staff to solve a “lack of sanitation issue with a project leader.  Failure to comply with requests after 2 weeks will result in the greenhouse staff cleaning the area.  Project budgets will be charged $50 per hour if this occurs.

5) Personal plants are prohibited from greenhouse sections and will be discarded when found.

6) Consult and/or inform either greenhouse supervisor prior to making modifications to the greenhouse structure or environment.

7) Plants in propagation sections must be labeled with the project leader's name.  Unlabeled plant materials will be discarded.

8) Do not add plants to collections without consulting the collection supervisor.

9) New individuals utilizing greenhouse space must contact the Safety Trainer (Roger Meissner) and receive safety training within five days from starting work in the greenhouse.
